S15781: Plant Adaptations in Splash 2023 (Nov. 18 - 19, 2023)
Squash is a fruit! Over thousands of years humans have selectively breed plants for various purposes. In this class we will be discussing some of the features humans have selected for as well as some interesting adaptations plants have developed to live in difficult environments. We will be having a discussion on some aspects of plant physiology and adaptations and then figuring out what parts of the plant some common foods are. We will also spend some time doing dissections and biological drawings of beans.

S15868: Stars, Sundials, and Shadows in Splash 2023 (Nov. 18 - 19, 2023)
Did you know that twice a year, the shadow of a sundial will trace out a straight line? Get ready to learn about how the Sun actually moves in the sky (it's a bit more than just going 'round each day'), how to define coordinates for the stars above us, and what seasonal changes mean for observers (us!) on the ground. We'll go through the conceptual basics of geometry on a sphere, how the night sky changes over the course of a year, and whether the Sun really does rise in the east and set in the west. And while we're at it, we'll put the Earth at the center of the Universe, explain the Infinite Corridor's twice-yearly perfect alignments, and might even pick out a surprising conic section! (no previous knowledge of heliocentrism required)

S15551: Plants Gone ExTrEmE in Spark 2023 (Mar. 18 - 19, 2023)
Did you know plants could eat mice?! For this and many other cool facts about plants, come to our class and take away your very own potted plant! We will talk about how plants survive extreme temperature, moisture and salt conditions, how trees can have different types of flowers, the precarious perch our bunches of bananas are on and much more. We will also have seeds, pots and soil for you to pot a plant!
