Brief Biographical Sketch:
I was born in California and grew up in Minnesota where I was captain of the math team at my high school. At MIT, I currently study mathematics with computer science (the 18-C degree program), and am planning on studying physics as well. I play 'cello in a string quartet, make models of polyhedra, develop software to analyze music, and various other things. http://kylem.net/ Past Classes(Clicking a class title will bring you to the course's section of the corresponding course catalog)M2890: The Joy of Eigenvalues in Splash! 2009 (Nov. 21 - 22, 2009)
Linear recurrence relations, generating functions, graphs, oh my! We will explore the connection between these seemingly unrelated ideas by the numbers which are intrinsic to their structure. Applications include Google PageRank, vibrating systems, and population dynamics. We will start with the definition of an eigenvalue and continue from there (with many examples and $$\lambda$$'s).
M2891: A Traversal of Graph Theory in Splash! 2009 (Nov. 21 - 22, 2009)
Graph theory is the study of connections between objects, be it cables and computers, bridges and islands, or relationships and people. We will start with the definitions of vertices and edges and cover basic properties of graphs, spanning trees, flows, electrical networks, random walks, graph coloring, and introductory Ramsey theory.
